Secrets of the Moon - Antithesis
Secrets of the Moon blend black, death, doom, and prog metal, slightly recalling Akercocke, though the latter lets in more light. I haven't heard this German band's first album, Stronghold of the Inviolables, though one review describes its production as "of the basement variety." Thus, Antithesis (Lupus Lounge, 2006; AJNA Offensive, 2007) follows the path of 2004's Carved in Stigmata Wounds, but with much stronger production and performances. On this album, Secrets of the Moon have found the intangible "it" - when you know your vision and execute it perfectly. The production brings this out, with huge guitars and a clear mix. I could listen to this album for hours. It's light and dark, it's epic and endless, and for once I am at a loss for words, as Antithesis simply blows me away.
The liner notes are beautiful, with refreshingly serif-free lyrics and subtle, black-on-black titles. Accompanying the lyrics are haunting black-and-white photos, including a detail of the Holocaust Memorial, one of Berlin's most powerful locations, spiritually and aesthetically. This is a total package, a near-perfect balance of esoteric and accessible. I cannot recommend this album highly enough. You can find it at The AJNA Offensive and The End.

I quite enjoy this album, it reminds me of how I write my own stuff to some degree (though the repeat their structures much more) but I found the cover a bit funny because of the symbol. I enjoy how metal bands from Celtic Frost and forth try to find a 'new pentagram, only ours!' to use for their imagery. Celtic Frost with the seven-pointed star, Therion with their eight-pointed one okay. Now here's a nine-pointed one!
I am waiting for the H.P.Lovecraft insprired band with the non-eucledian star on the cover.
Oh wait, Morbid Angel.
Yeah, that symbol on the cover had me scratching my head, too. Hopefully I can ask the band what that's all about!
This is great, I gotta buy this.
I don't know what the star is, but Into Another used that thing on an album cover over 10 years ago. If you Google it several different sources come up as well.
I can't count. The one on the Into Another album has 11 points as opposed to nine. But either way... you can Google all that shit and all kinds of junk comes up.
haha! eleven! Let's find the metal band with the ten-pointed star!
You guys are such nerds.
It appears that the cover symbol is a variant of the Masonic Teutonic cross:

Note the phrase "Ordo Ab Chao", which of course relates to the Mayhem album.
