Give the Drummer Some

Dave Lombardo

Not much to report, as I've just moved to San Francisco, and it's tough to publish without Internet. Stylus just ran its 50 Greatest Rock Drummers feature, for which I wrote on Igor Cavalera and Dave Lombardo. Such lists piss off everyone, which seems to be the key for getting site hits. Neil Peart at #22? Bill Berry ranked higher than Billy Cobham? Not your average top drummers list, that's for sure.

For my money (or lack of it), here are my metal favorites:

10. Flo Mounier (Cryptopsy)
9. Ben Koller (Converge)
8. Brann Dailor (Mastodon)
7. Mike Smith (Suffocation)
6. Virgil Donati (Planet X)
5. Dave Culross (Malevolent Creation)
4. Bill Ward (Black Sabbath)
3. Vinnie Paul (Pantera)
2. Igor Cavalera (Sepultura)
1. Dave Lombardo (Slayer)

In Metal, drummers need to be able to play riffs on drums. This is my big rule for selecting good metal drumming. These people are the best, and best people need to be in no order:

Gene Hoglan from places.
Steve Shelton from Confessor.
Rick Colaluca from Watchtower.
Maik from Nostromo.
John Longstreth from lots of bands, in my picks because of Dim Mak.
Bill Bruford from Gordian Knot (I am so glad I found a metal band he's played in so I can stick him in my lineup).

Finally, mr.Zonder from Warlord/ex-Fates Warning. I mean, a metal drummers list without Mark Zonder. Buh.

IO - You should have just done that entire list for Stylus. Honestly, it was one of the most disorganized, poorly thought-out features I've seen over there in quite a while, and pretty much summarized what's been wrong with Stylus in the past year or so: there are just too many cooks in the kitchen. Loved your contributions, as always, though.

I'd add Martin Lopez of Opeth to the list, too. He's got some of the most tasteful chops in metal.

Heh, yes, I would have done the list differently. The beauty and ugliness of democracy! I muchly dig Lopez' work, too. Metal is just overflowing with great drummers.

and what was Brann Dailor's reply when asked who his favorite drummer was?
Phil Collins. He even pulled out his record collection to show off the Genesis albums that he thought had the best drumming.

Phil Collins is real good. its true. catch his other band also, Brand X if you think i am full of it (which most of you probably think i am).

Yeah, John Merryman is definitely Cephalic Carnage's secret weapon. It's a shame he never gets mentioned in lists like this.

Oh shit, yeah, how could I forget Steve Shelton as well? That dude's inhuman with the timing...

And yes, Hoglan. Good calls.
