Pumping Iron
![]() |
Hands down, my favorite workout soundtrack is Pantera's Far Beyond Driven. I never listen to this record in any other context. But when I need some testosterone overload, I just dial up some "stronger than all," and I can walk through walls. What music do you work out to?
Pantera - Strength Beyond Strength
Five of my recent workout soundtracks:
1. Halford - Crucible
2. Kronos - The Hellenic Terror
3. Burst - Prey on Life
4. Sepultura - Arise
5. Satyricon - Now, Diabolical
I took an informal poll in a metal forum I belong to, and these were people's favorite bands to get them pumped, in descending order:
1. Kataklysm
2. Necrophagist
3. Ion Dissonance
4. Vital Remains
5. Pantera
Surprise nominations included Korpiklaani, Finntroll, and Xasthur.

Well I was never into body-building (and that header picture grosses me out a bit) but I do aeroboc and nonaerobic workouts and some small weights to keep an able body. I usually go with
Fields of the Nephilim - Dawnrazor
and a selection of Autechre tunes from all their discography.
Both artists would be somewhat put off I feel if they told them people use their music for this sort of thing. The Xastur dude too, I bet!
I did a low level bodybuilding competition in 1994. I still lift, and Bolt Thrower and Requiem are good choices. Great movie, by the way.
Odious Sanction - no motivation to live
Suicidal Tendencies- lights, camera, revolution.....
Integrity- to die for
Aeon- bleeding the false
Morbid Angel- domination
Long, long ago, when I went to the gym, one of my favorite workout bands was Borknagar, so the Korpiklaani nomination makes a lot of sense to me (although the latter seems more suited to 12 ounce curls than any other form of exercise). On the other hand, Xasthur is pretty bizarre workout music. Music for pumping heroin, yes -- music for pumping iron, no.
Wow... Kataklysm? Really? Necrophagist? Ion Dissonance!?!?
I've been lazy about taking music to the gym for awhile now, but Madball, Strife, and the almighty Integrity never fail as a workout soundtrack.
Yeah, some of those picks surprised me, too. I can see Kataklysm and Bolt Thrower, though - chunky, solid, and heavy on the grooves.
I used to only listen to Public Enemy's "It Takes A Nation Of Millions", but i learned years ago, that you can get a much better workout by listening to nothing but your own breathing. lifting can be a very calming experience without a soundtrack.
i work out to anything heavy, be it metal, hardcore or rap. i'm not too picky about specifics, just need the heaviness to feed me.
Gette, we'll have to hit a gym together sometime!
