No love for Wolves in the Throne Room or Baroness, eh?
2007 was jammed with letdowns for me. I think pretty much all of my favorites of the year were from bands you'd either never expect or from bands that I wasn't really familiar with beforehand.
I'm just glad SOMEONE else out there agrees with me that "The Blackening" is a fucking letdown album and NOT one of the best of the year. I'm sorry, that record just does not hold a candle to Machine Head's early years at all, and I'm shocked that all the pre-release hype comparing it to early Metallic payed off. Fucking 9-minute songs do not Metallica make. It's not a terrible record by any means, but it's definitely boring. I've not listened to it more than once or twice.
I thought "Lifeline" was really good, though. "Conqueror" disappointed me at first and then grew on me, though was still a mild disappointment in the long run compared to the brilliance of its predecessors, but "Lifeline" I enjoyed right away.
Speaking of letdowns, the Baroness and Wolves in the Throne Room albums were both boring and massively overrated. Especially considering how fucking brilliant the Wolves in the Throne Room debut was. The Wolves... album was decent, just boring, but that Baroness album was soooooo friggin' dull I could barely get through the first couple of songs. I don't get the fuss over that disc at all. And I generally liked that band's past work, too.
I think I'm just getting too old, bitter, jaded, and used to all this crap.
That's why I'm listening to Europe right now. "Cherokee". That's fucking songwriting!!!
Couldn't agree more about the Jesu records. I've been listening to that 3 Inches of Blood for four months now and I'm still not sick of it.
Great list.
no love for the release by Bison?
thanks for the tip for modern life is war and long distance calling,as i had not heard of them before and now are among my favourites.
Doomsword
Sacred Oath
Paradise Lost
Mekong Delta
Stygian Shore
I know you've been down on Jesu's current direction, but listing Machine Head as a disappointment? Man, they were a massive, massive surprise for me. Before I heard the album, I couldn't care less about those guys, but when I heard it, I was swayed instantly.
A very solid list, IO. Just posted mine...
While good, Wolves in the Throne Room felt like a transitional record to me. Baroness I just didn't get around to hearing. The single was surprisingly mild. Machine Head had so much hunger on Through the Ashes of Empires, but the problem on The Blackening was that they believed their own hype. Dave, you're the only person to have listed Nile this year. Maybe you have more faith in death metal now than most. Interesting list heavy on old-schoolers, I'll have to not write them off yet...
Blacking-borining
3 inches of blood- Fucking derivative in all the right ways. I just keep coming back to that record, plus it's an awesome record for metalheads that run.
Baroness- is ok i guess, i didn't get it. Maybe indie metal guys needed a new mastodon or something.
High on Fire- I think death is.. a solid album
The new Prong -kinda awful
Fuck. Forgot about 3IOB. And Nahemah...DAMN! Another one. I always miss some. And Andrew...Europe??? Next thing you know you're going to be going on about Cameo...
There was a pretty awesome codpiece in that on Cameo video...
Hey, you don't mess with Cameo.
