Foscor - I Tornà de les Cendres
Catalan black metallers Foscor have released a video for "I Tornà de les Cendres", from their album The Smile of the Sad Ones, which I wrote about here. The video takes place in a spa in Catalonia called the Balneari de la Puda (built in 1870, abandoned in 1958). Its atmosphere is thick like caked blood. A girl wanders the halls of the decaying complex, encountering shadowy figures - or is it all in her head? The prostrate poses and old world vibe recall Morbid Angel's video for "God of Emptiness". The colors match the music: gritty, duskily beautiful. It's refreshing to see black metal sans panda paint. I'm a big fan of Foscor, and wonder why they aren't huge.

This is quite well done, my only gripe is that it's too amply lit. I don't know if you've seen the film, Dagon, very Cthulhu Mythos-canon, quite enjoyable apart from a few embarassing CGI parts, but like this videoclip, the dread is diminished by too well-lit sets! Imagine this video swimming in faded, higher contrast darkness with centered lights here and there and flickering. The shots with the girl crawling by the brightly lit arches are wonderful as they are, though.
Foscor sounds like the name of a Catalan supermarket, but I like this abandoned spa metal. This labyrinth could be located under the cliffs near the old house in El Orfanata.
I guess they aren't huge for the same reasons other highly-poised mid-tempo black metal acts like Khold don't find an audience; partly because it's too harsh and coded for Sonic Youth fans, but not frantic enough for Dimmu Borgir's legions.

Interesting that you use the word "coded," Ian - Xasthur is much more coded, yet probably enjoys a sizeable fanbase overlap with Sonic Youth's. Early Sonic Youth was as harsh and coded as anything. As for Dimmu Borgir's legions...I suppose the common denominator here is that the size of the fanbase relates directly to the size of the marketing budget.
