XXX Maniak / Coffins - The Cracks of Doom (split)

XXX Maniak and Coffins make a bizarre couple, but this split rumbles with monstrous intensity. In true grind fashion, Maniak punch the gut with 30-second songs; titles like "Raped by a Retard," "Hot Nazi Sluts Have Hot Steaming Guts," and "Perpetually Exploding Uterus" speak for themselves. "Aroused by the Rape Trial" is one big ball gag of pure shock value. Mastermind Michael Yale hammers home Maniak's horrific goregrind with the help of a drum machine. In nearly 14 minutes, 20 songs make skullfucking sexier than metal's usual face-slicing blasphemy.

Coffins linger like a hangnail, poking two tracks into the last 16 minutes. This crushing Japanese death/doom outfit conjures the aura of the split's putrid cover – cigarette-smoking, strap-on-wearing skeletons hovering near rape victims. "Ebony Tears" pays sweet homage to Cathedral, while "The Cracks of Doom" has the bitter, bold taste of blood and feces. Still, this split doesn't do as much justice for Coffins as their latest full-length, Buried Death, on 20 Buck Spin.

Eh, I'll give this a try. Probably will be the first & last time I listen to XXX Maniak. One of those mis-spelled band names like Korn/Limp Bizkit.
XXXManiak was worth a listen, but like anon 10:58, probably the first and last for me. But who knows, maybe there's a goregrind phase in my future! In any case, thanks (always) for your great work, and introducing me to new bands.
If I can make a well-intentioned suggestion: it might be best to not allude to the taste of blood and feces unless it's somehow established that it's about one's imagination of how they would taste!
This doesn't go to say one couldn't liken a riff to something like getting ground up on a meat grinder or whatever, but it's pretty clear there that one can't speak from experience so from a writing point of view it works just fine. But blood and shit are readily available so there is a case for you know, 'writing what one knows'. I hope I am making a sorta lucid point, heh
Blood tastes kind of good. The other one I don't know about.
My favorite thing about Coffins is that massive guitar sound. Other than that it's just more Frost/Hellhammer...
