Heshers vs. Hipsters: Kylesa tours with Pinback

Laura Pleasants, Kylesa

Kylesa is touring with fucking Pinback. I commented last year on another weird tour Kylesa did (Revolver's "Hottest Chicks in Metal" tour, with Lacuna Coil, Within Temptation, et al.), but this is just bizarre. In case you don't know Pinback, they're indie rock. They have a knack for interlocking vocals and guitars that evoke that time-honored format, the round. But despite their quality (they're one of three indie rock bands I like), they and Kylesa should not be dating, so to speak. Pinback's Rob Crow has a metal project, Goblin Cock, and my guess is that he helped pick Kylesa. But, still. They should have called this the "Heshers vs. Hipsters" tour. Black Sabbath shared some bills with The Ramones in 1978, but this is even stranger. Dates are below - links to buy tickets are here.

wow, I had no intention of seeing pinback again on saturday until now. (last time i saw them, they played everything nearly twice as fast. impressive, but not really enjoyable). I'm glad you picked an older song, everything from their last 2 albums is somewhat tainted by being featured on The OC ;)

Crow also did some remixes, including Genghis Tron, and played on that deftones side project.

Anyway, it'll be nice to not sit through less-talented, more boring indie band beforehand.

"Hottest Chicks in Metal"?! Such a gross, fratty name for a tour.

Wow, I can't imagine Pinback playing things twice as fast...and I didn't know they were on those OC mixes. When it comes to TV, I live under a rock.

Speaking of living under a rock, roxy, surely you've heard of Revolver's take on the swimsuit issue the past 3 years? It always generates so much commentary.

Yeah, I wouldn't have guessed it either, most of the picking is so fast at normal speeds. It was impressive, in a technical sense, at least.

When it comes to magazines, I live under just as much of a rock. that's appalling.

The crowd to that show is going to be really shitty, as crowds with hipsters usually tend to be. There are a few bands I like that are classified as indie rock, but I always hate seeing them live because I can only stand being surrounded by so many pairs of tight girls pants, v-neck t-shirts, and bangs that cover one eye.

Kuma's has a burger called Goblin Cock.

It's like metal deep throating me with meaty flavor.

Anyhoo, I don't mind seeing hipsters at metal shows, I just hate the ones who act like dicks and preach about riding fixed gear bikes and being vegan when you're just trying to get a PBR from the bar.

This brings to mind the show that Dillinger Escape Plan did with Ol' Dirty Bastard at CMJ back in 2003. What glorious incongruity.

I get pretty sick of metal dudes slagging on hipsters when metal dudes can be just as elitist and defensive as the hipsters they hate. At the very least the indie rock crowd is open-minded enough to embrace parts of metaldom. With the possible exception of the "post-metal" subgenre (which gets plenty of bad press), I don't see metalheads returning the favor at all. Who cares if a kid in skinny pants and thick glasses digs The Sword but doesn't know what NWOBHM stands for? That band is a gateway into better, heavier things. I think crossover into other styles and demographics is key to the future of every kind of music, metal included.

Both Kylesa and Pinback are great bands, and IMHO Pinback is the far more interesting and nuanced of the two. Seems like a pretty perfect night to me. Also if you haven't already, listen to the Sleeping People album "Growing." Instrumental mathy stuff from San Diego, similar to Don Caballero -- Rob Crow guests on the last track and it's sublime.
