A Better Tomorrow #3: Primitive Black Metal

Illustration of Fenriz by Nagawika

There must be some happy medium between "Pro Tooled to death, on Nuclear Blast/Century Media" and "recorded in a dumpster under two damp mattresses, wants to be our MySpace friend." Then again, black metal shouldn't be about happy mediums. In this third installment of A Better Tomorrow, Jess Blumensheid goes dumpster diving to present the filthiest, most primitive black metal.

Yes, Carlo, that would be great. The problem is creating an RSS feed just for the podcasts label of this site, not for the entire site. Would you know how to do that? If so, please email invisibleoranges at gmail dot com. Thanks!

The podcast was entertaining.

I felt that the 'voices' you did when quoting these artists were kinda annoying, and in the case of the statements of Bone Awl and Beherit, self-defeating, because they weren't pretending to be some kinda 'dark' persona or whatever. This is not my scene and I can take a joke and really, I'm not sure how seriously anyone should take say, Black Witchery, but not all the artists in your list deserved the same treatment.

Also I didn't expect the Archgoat song to be so doomy and - dare I say it - melodic.

My *favorite* interview with Black Witchery is this one, where they joke about being scat fetishists.

Nothing like frat-boyish humor and clumsy homophobia to add to a band's mystique.

I should add that, as much as I also don't want to be put in the humorless metal fan category, I agree with Helm about the voices. I can understand their function--critical distance can be a tricky thing to establish with Black Metal--but they seemed a little gratuitous.

Whatever. Great work, anyway. I dug all the song picks, and the way Jess themed and arranged the episode was a cool idea.

I liked the voices because they made me laugh. See also: "And the winner gets......NOTHING! How Nihilistic is that?"

Gold Star.
