Metal Mixtape: Profound Lore Sampler 2009

In the past two years, no label has pushed metal's envelope more than Profound Lore. Proprietor Chris Bruni has diverse yet impeccable taste, resulting in a steady stream of critically acclaimed releases. (See this interview with him here.) Notables in 2009 include Saros (review, interview), Cobalt (review), Amesoeurs (review, review), YOB (review), and Crucifist (review). Portal's Swarth just came out and is warping minds everywhere. Bruni has handpicked one track from each Profound Lore release this year for this killer (i.e., most labels would kill to have his roster) sampler. It includes tastes of the upcoming Krallice (11/10), Impetuous Ritual (12/15), and Worm Ouroboros (11/24) records. You can download it for free below.

Christ, when you lay them all out like that...Profound Lore had an incredible year. The best label in metal at the moment.

Why is Swarth "warping minds everywhere?"

I love the debut, but it's been a steep drop since then.

Wow.

"They are very filthy sounding, pissed-off... blah blah blah."

So, Pantera, no?

There's a reason music critics aren't on TV.

I wouldn't call Portal "pissed-off" nor Pantera "filthy sounding."

I came across this promo trailer for Swarth:

Speaking of Youtube clips, here is a bizarre one, Crucifist related that I came across:

Right on, dudefest. "Filthy" is an adjective better dispatched for status quo Black Metal.

Cosmo, is your mind warped by Swarth? I anxiously await your review.

The new Portal is more Seepia than Outre I think, and each album has a different line up. But I don't how that effected the outcome of each album. But at least the music has depth of sorts, it's unique in its own twisted way, unlike the one-dimensional crap Nuclear War Now puts out (with the exception of Dead Congregation of course). Embrace Of Thorns, LOL...

Wow, that "Crucifist" video is one of the creepiest things I've ever seen.

I'm not sure yet what I'll do re: Portal coverage.

Anon:

"Unique" is not equivalent to "quality."

"Depth of sorts" is not equivalent to "profound."

I think I'm gonna can this whole music-crit thing and start a Daily Howler site dissecting various talking points.

appreciate the sampler, man - i've enjoyed the little bits from Crucifist, Krallice & YOB (among others mentioned) that have been posted online, glad to have the opportunity to hear some more. and the Cobalt album is fucken monstrous, still keeping a high spot on my '09 favs list, still a frequent presence in my stereo all these months later.

I'm tempted to download this just for the Krallice song but I'm probably(absolutely) going to buy the LP version when it comes out. Just got my LP version of the S/T so I can finally take it off my iPod.
