Cognizance Assail "The Towering Monument" With Unflinching Death Metal (Early Track Stream)

Cognizance has never been afraid of slotting in some sick, chunky grooves when it comes to technical death metal, and their new single "The Towering Monument" just reinforces that. We're premiering a video of the single below, which shows the five-piece ripping through the track with almost concerning ease, delivering technical metal that's surprisingly groovy given how often it flits from riff to riff. The band doesn't really give the listener a chance to get lost, as "The Towering Monument" is a ripper of a track that just seems to make sense the whole time you hear it.

Drummer David Diepold helps keep things consistent but also fresh, tying his fills into the complex guitar rhythms but switching up his groove perhaps even more than the strings do. Since I'm on the subject of performances, I'll also note it's nice to see vocalist Henry Pryce a) not stare directly into the camera for his vocals and b) avoid the usual death metal vocal delivery tropes (angry stares, exaggerated movements, the works). It all ties back to that 'concerning' ease: Cognizance are pretty damn good at this death metal thing and their new record Phantazein is just more proof.

Phantazein releases January 26th, 2024 and is the band's first via Willowtip Records - pre-orders start Friday, November 3rd.
